Haiti's Prime Minister Ariel Henry has announced the sacking of the chief prosecutor who had accused him of involvement in the assassination of President Jovenel Moise. In a letter dated Monday, Mr. Henry accused the prosecutor of a serious administrative offense. It's unclear whether he has the power to dismiss him. Here's Will Grant. Haiti's chief prosecutor Bedford Claude has called for the investigating judge to charge the prime minister who was subsequently banned from leaving the country. Specifically, he's accused of being in telephone contact with a key suspect who has now fled at the time of the murder. However, it didn't take long for Prime Minister Henry tostrike back. In a public letter, he told Mr. Claude that he was being removed from his position as prosecutor, accusing him of serious failings. Polls are closing in California where voters have been deciding whether to oust the Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom 16 months before the end of his term. He's widely expected to win the 50% of votes needed to stay in office. The recall vote was initiated by Republicans, angered by strict coronavirus regulations.
Donald Trump has accused the United States' most senior military officer of treason. He wasresponding toa new book which says the chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley was worried during the final moments of Mr. Trump's presidency that he might order a military strike against China. Here's Grant Ferrett. In a television interview, Donald Trump denied that he'd ever contemplated attacking China. He was speaking after the Washington Post published an account of a book by two of its best-known journalists Bob Woodward and Robert Costa. They said that General Milley became so concerned about Donald Trump's mental stability that he twice contacted his Chinese counterpart. After Trump's supporters overrun the Capitol building in January, the general is said to have told his Chinese opposite number: everything's fine, but democracy can be sloppy sometimes.
The Mexican authorities are searching for 20 migrants who were abducted by armed men from a hotel in the middle of the night. Most of those kidnaped came from Haiti and Venezuela and were thought to be heading for the U.S. The motive is not yet clear.
The French Defense Minister Florence Parly has warned Mali against finalizing a deal with a Russian security firm. There have been reports Mali's military rulersare close tohiring mercenaries from the Wagner Group. Ms Parly said the potential deal would undermine efforts by France to combat Jihadists in the region. Wagner operates in several African countries.
